Who Are We?

We are Bay Area Balanced Dog Training serving the California Bay Area and surrounding areas.

We are a privately owned dog training company based out of the East Bay area in the outskirts of San Francisco. We believe that with proper management, structure, consistency, motivational techniques, and clear communication every dog can learn and behavior modification is achievable. We train all dogs, but have a special affinity for aggression cases, and will work with dogs that have bite histories with people and/or dogs.

Dog Training Programs

Board and Train

Our Board and Train program, ideal for dogs 6 months and older, offers a comprehensive training experience where dogs live with our trainers for 2 to 6 weeks. This program focuses on building communication, drive, and motivation, providing a strong foundation for long-term success. Unlike private training, Board and Train allows dogs to "restart" with perfect guidance from the start. Owners also receive a lesson at pickup and another within 30 days to reinforce the training.

Hybrid Board and Train Programs

This is a program that is perfect for anyone on a tight budget and whose dog has a good foundation and does not necessarily require a full length (4+ weeks) stay. This is a program that consists of a 2 or 3 week board and train combined with a set of discounted private lessons. The privates are mostly used to teach the dog a more solid foundation before the board and train, so that Meryl can focus on the main issues such as leash reactivity, off leash training, etc. This program is not suitable for dogs with major dog and/or human aggression cases or for extremely fearful dogs.

Puppy Training

This program is for puppies that have had two rounds of shots, but are still under 5.5/6 months of age. This is a modified board and train program. Puppies are with the trainer Monday through Friday with pick up and drop off in Pleasant Hill. The program is sold in 2 week increments with a video lesson on one Friday for you to practice over the first weekend, and an in person lesson on the second Friday. Puppies will continue to work on crate and house training, confidence building, engagement, how to lure and shape to learn new commands, and will have proper exposure to other dogs. Clients who utilize this program for their new puppies will receive a discount on board and trains once the dog is around 6 months of age.

Private Training

This program involves meeting in person on average every two weeks. During these sessions Meryl will demonstrate and show you how to teach your dog whatever is required to meet your goals, and then between lessons you will work with your dog on these skills.

Structured Boarding

Boarding has up until now only been offered to dogs that have completed a board and train, but is a new option on a case by case basis. Dogs must have some crate training in order to be considered, and must not have any severe behavioral issues or aggression issues. Intact dogs and dogs with dog aggression/reactivity issues are ok. This is also a great fit for fearful and nervous dogs who cannot handle the stress of a large boarding kennel, and for owners who want their dogs to stay with a trainer with fifteen years of experience. Space is limited, so please reach out in advance as much as possible.

Our Background

Our trainer has a degree in Animal Science from Cal Poly State University San Luis Obispo, has been the on staff trainer at a large humane society, attends seminars and trains with multiple groups and clubs around the state, and does competitive dog sports with her personal dogs that gives her a very diverse background rooted in science and experience.
